Rugby World Cup 2015
Team Base for France in RWC 2015
Last year Trinity School was confirmed as an Official Team Base for Rugby World Cup 2015. The whole school was incredibly excited when the French national Rugby team chose us as their Team Base.
In the run up to France's arrival, Trinity hosted the prestigious Webb Ellis Cup Trophy Tour on September 8th. The date coincided with the visit of Sir Clive Woodward, World Cup winning England coach, who gave an inspirational talk and formally opened the brand new Strength and Conditioning Centre.
Trinity Boys Choir was one of only 20 school choirs in England and Wales to be selected to take part in the ceremonies that officially welcomed the teams to Rugby World Cup 2015. The ceremonies included the formal presentation of official tournament caps and Rugby World Cup 2015 participation medals. The Tournament's Welcome Ceremony for France took place on September 14th in the historic Painted Hall at the Old Royal Naval College, Greenwich where Trinity Boys Choir gave a rousing rendition of World in Union.
‘Les Bleus’ arrived at Trinity on September 13th welcomed by a cheering crowd of pupils, parents and staff. They made full use of our 1st XV pitch, sports hall, pool, fitness suite, brand new strength and conditioning centre, and sports pavilion, and repeatedly commented publicly on the quality of Trinity's facilities. In Philippe Saint-André's words: "Trinity's pitch is better than the Stade de France!" Mais oui!
The French Rugby Team repaid Trinity's hospitality by engaging generously with the whole School community. The highlight of their stay was the open training session on September 26th when pupils and parents watched in delight as the players went through their practice routine. Frédéric Michalak kindly agreed to being interviewed for Trinity News by our 1st XV captain, Charlie Fatoma and you can watch the interview HERE. Charlie was also treated to a one-on-one kicking session with Michalak after the French star fly-half was impressed with Charlie's performance while playing for the 1st XV (a short highlight video of the training session can be seen HERE). Philippe Saint-André came to speak at Assembly and Thierry Dusautoir with four of his players came to French lessons during the week, answering all sorts of questions by pupils and signing autographs. As Director of Rugby Aaron Liffchak said: "We could not have wished for a better team to host."
Beyond Trinity, Croydon and the local community also reaped the benefits of having Rugby World Cup 2015 come to town, in particular through celebratory events planned in conjunction with Croydon BID and Surrey Rugby on September 24-27th.
Trinity School says 'Merci' to France for choosing us as a Team Base!
